As you start booking your pre-wedding hair trials, you're probably spending a great deal of time thinking about how you want your hair to be styled on the big day. While the decision to go with an elegant updo or long, dreamy curls is an important one, you should also devote a little time to assessing the health of your hair. After all, even the best hairstylists in the world can only do so much with damaged locks. To ensure your beauty pros have the best canvas to work with, here are four simple tips for improving the quality of your hair ahead of the wedding.

Talk to your regular hairstylist and your big-day pro.

Knowledge is power, so it's a good idea to consult both the woman or man who typically cuts your hair as well as the professional you've hired for wedding day about the health of your locks. A trusted hairstylist, especially someone you see regularly, should be able to give you the best tips about your hair itself. If they have a particular product they recommend for split-ends or a dry scalp, take their advice—if they see you frequently, they know what will work for your hair. You should also talk to the stylist you've hired for the wedding day. They'll make recommendations specifically based on what you'd like your hair to look like for the ceremony and reception.

Do your best to use less heat.

It's simple math: Less heat means less damage to your locks. As often as you can in the months leading up to your wedding, try to stay away from blow dryers, straighteners, or curling irons. If you are going to apply heat to your hair, make sure to use a quality heat protectant before working with any tools.

Try a hair mask.

Whether you go the DIY route (you'll find there are tons of at-home hair mask recipes online) or purchase one from a hair care company, it's important to try a few different options until you find one that gives you the results you want. While the goal is to get the healthiest of hair at the fastest rate possible, you definitely do not want to over-do it, do one or two a month should do the trick. Most salons also offer professional hair masks, so inquire about one ahead of your next visit.

Wait to detangle.

Pulling and brushing out wet hair frequently leads to damaged follicles. After you're out of the shower or bath, get your hair as dry as possible with a towel or microfiber wrap, then follow with a detangling spray or serum before brushing.
