Woman Destroys $200,000 Worth Of Art While Taking Selfie

By Shubham Kishore, International Business Times

The best moments in life are not complete without that all-important selfie, but being careless while trying to capture it on your smartphone camera can be very damaging.

That is what happened at The 14th Factory in Los Angeles a few weeks ago. A woman trying to take a selfie with the artwork on display at the gallery knocked over a pedestal, which in turn fell on several others, setting the gallery back by $200,000, reports said

Footage from security cameras at the gallery shows art aficionados looking at the sculptures placed on pedestals. A woman can be seen kneeling down in front of a row of pedestals, attempting to take a selfie. And then she loses her balance and knocks over the pedestal behind her, setting off a domino effect that knocks over at least 10 more pedestals, all supporting sculptures.

[post_ads]The woman, who has not been identified, quickly gets up and starts rearranging the pedestals. But the damage had been done. The museum said that three sculptures were “permanently damaged” in the incident and the losses are estimated at $200,000, reports said.

It is unclear if the gallery sent a bill for the damages to the woman.

The gallery at The 14th Factory where the incident took place is described as  “a monumental, multiple-media, socially engaged art and documentary experience conceived by the Hong Kong-based British artist Simon Birch."

The incident occurred more than a week ago but the video was shared on Thursday by someone who claimed to know Birch personally.

The art exhibit is titled "Hypercaine," a collaboration between Birch, Gabriel Chan, Jacob Blitzer, and Gloria Yu.

Each pedestal is topped with a crown-like piece of art. Some are made of nylon, scrap material, and wood, but many are made of precious metals like silver, gold, and marble, reports said.
The art factory has been built on the outskirts of downtown Los Angeles, where “Birch and his 20 creative collaborators work and manufacture their art, creating an ever-changing immersive environment of 14 interlinked spaces comprised of video, installation, sculpture, paintings, and performance. ”

The selfie craze has swept across the world, and several serious accidents and deaths have been reported in the past involving people trying to take selfies.

A recent study said that more than 120 people across the world have lost their lives while taking selfies at exotic or dangerous locations between March 2014 and September 2016, Forbes reported.

The study, “Me, Myself and My Killfie: Characterizing and Preventing Selfie Deaths” was conducted by researchers from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology in Delhi, India.

The study also revealed that 60 percent of such deaths have occurred in India, reports said.
